1971 GMC Yukon XL back from paint

Now starts my tough job putting it back together.
I was hoping for a daily driver, but the paint turned out way too nice.
I won't let the kids near it now

Re: 1971 GMC Yukon XL back from paint

I decided to strip the black paint from the front chrome pieces. It's all original and thought I could paint the black back on later if I chose.

I can't believe the paint stuck to the chrome for all those years.

Re: 1971 GMC Yukon XL back from paint

I decided to go with the LED side marker lights that also have the turn signal option.

We wired the back ones for signal too by running signal wire from the front so they don't light up when the brakes come on.

Re: 1971 GMC Yukon XL back from paint

The rear LED were a little trickier. I don't like the rapid fire 3 blinks then stay on for the brakes. (That's using the red wire).

We ended up just using the yellow wire which is for the isolated turn and connected to the factory brake/turn wire.

It acts more like the stock setup even though they are LED.

The only thing I don't like about the LED's is that the parking lights flicker slightly. It's in the way they are constructed and only being on 10% of the time.

X1000%! I drive mine every chance I get, and over time it has acquired some issues with the finish. I built my burb to drive and have fun with, and I hope you are doing the same with yours!

Funny thing to note... I was at a local car show, and the "judges" came up and wanted to talk to me about my truck. They started to point out all of the chips, scratches, and miss aligned this and that.. I just laughed out loud, since all they did was point point out a well loved truck in my mind.
My truck is not a trailer queen, and it was put together exactly how it was built miss aligned panels and all... Don't get caught up in all that silly stuff ok, unless you are planning to keep your burb under glass and trailer it everywhere. Only to brag about the body workers that assembled your burb in it's restoration.

Drive the heck out of it, and enjoy the fruits of your labor and expenses in building your beautiful rig.

Beautiful burb! Can I ask what you used to remove the black from the grill and what you used to polish the grill? I need to clean up a 67 GMC grill and yours looks sweet.

Re: 1971 GMC Yukon XL back from paint

I used regular paint stripper from my local hardware store. The paint did not bubble up, but it came off easily with the steel wool after stripper set for a few minutes.

Then I just used mothers billet with fine steel wool to polish. I think any metal polish would be fine.

Who painted the burb for you and were you happy with them? I've been trying to find a good shop in WA or OR. Burb looks sweet btw.
