1955 3100 build for my son

well my son is 15 and starting driver's education now. he really likes the style of the old trucks, so he has laid claim to the '55 that was a parts truck for my '59 project, mainly for its cab and rear fenders and other bits as needed. it has a title though.

Re: 1955 3100 build for my son

so he started sanding and primering:

that's his truck outside in the driveway in this pic, sitting next to my buick. the blue cab on it has almost no floor on the passenger side - not worth repairing.

Re: 1955 3100 build for my son

it has either been raining or we have been out of town on weekends for the last couple months, but this last weekend it was clear. he got the from half of the frame all cleaned up with a scraper, wire brush and a wire wheel on a grinder. almost done:

then he primed it and we set the cab back on the frame to be able to get the engine setup in place next time we work on it

Re: 1955 3100 build for my son

next few items to do are:
getting the engine and tranny mounted
start on body work on the cab
pull the bed and clean the rear part of the frame

Re: 1955 3100 build for my son

due to his age and needing a car soon, i gave him my 385 CI SBC and TH350 out of my '59 project, as well ans the brake booster/frame mount/MC setup that i was going to use.

Re: 1955 3100 build for my son

Best advice I can give is to get him a beater to drive as a DD during the restoration and first year of real driving. That is what I did with my oldest daughter. She choose a 67 Mustang for the dream car, drove a 71 Montego wagon as the learner. Got the accident, miscalculated bollard hits, etc. out of the way in the wagon, learning mechanical skills on both over the year. Once she started driving the Mustang she appreciated and maintained it.
