Barn Door windows

Has anyone converted the barn door windows to pop open for fresh air circulation? It seems like there should be a way to put hinges on the top of the glass and pop latches on the bottom so they could be opened a few inches.
Kinda like this at the bottom of the window.

Re: Barn Door windows

It might work. You'd have to change the style of gasket.

Is the glass tempered? If not, you'd have to make copies out of non tempered glass so you can drill holes

Ya I figured it would take custom glass but it sure seems doable!

Re: Barn Door windows

I was thinking the same thing, I was even going to take it a step further and make the back side windows open as well, I think the early vans rear windows opened but not for sure, there was a guy doing safari windows on the back and said he could do a windsheild also which would be different.

One thing to watch for if you do this, is exhaust fumes. If you're old enough to remember riding in a station wagon with the little side spoilers or the roof rack with the down facing spoiler at the back, they were designed to help keep dust and dirt off the rear window. But without them and rear exhaust, when the rear window was open, it would suck the exhaust into the car.Just a heads up.

Good point sir!! My exhaust exits out the side just behind the rear tires. I wonder it that would work out ok.

Re: Barn Door windows

Try searching for "safari" windows on a VW forum. Might be able to modify them.
