Longbed 6.0 build

I started last summer by picking up this 71 c10 longbed on Craigslist. It has 3 O.T.T, 350, manual power steering, power front disc brakes. I drove it an hour and half down the interstate with no problems, drove great.
My initial plan was to just drive it as is until I was done with school in a couple years figuring with a full time job and part time college I wouldn't have any time.... But I just couldn't wait.

Re: Longbed 6.0 build

So last spring I tore into the steering, brakes and suspension. Replaced all parts with new, lowered it with a 4-6 drop from ECE and added some wheels.
20" Ridler 645s
8.5" front 10" rear
Toyo Proxes II 295/40/20, 255/40/20
I also re-covered the seat and got a new dash pad, but no pictures of before and after. Nothing to special right now, just freshened up a bit.

Re: Longbed 6.0 build

Currently I'm working on a swap to a 2005 Lq4 6.0 and 4l80e with 75k miles.
Taking the whole front clip was easy with the cherry picker. I'll be posting more frequently as I go along in the next steps as I'm sure I'll be needing some tips and advise.

Re: Longbed 6.0 build

A couple straps around the wheel wells and a strap in the front to help balance.

Re: Longbed 6.0 build

Pulled the wiring harness off today. Got to admit, I'm a little intimidated but the instructions on LT1swap seem to be explained pretty well.

Re: Longbed 6.0 build

Are you going to modify your harness your self or send it off to someone

Re: Longbed 6.0 build

HartRod - Have seen the bracket and will place an order sometime soon.

Got some goodies in today.
Chevrolet performace Musclecar oil pan
Trans cooler lines and fittings
Fuse block

Plan for the transmission cooling is to tap into the existing cooler hard lines with the Derale compression fitting made for this and use the existing trans cooler section in the radiator I already have. No higher stall converter for the moment, so no external cooler at this time.

Re: Longbed 6.0 build

The oil pan.
Not sure exactly how it all goes together, but I'm sure once I remove the old one it will make sense.

Re: Longbed 6.0 build

Got the oil pan installed today.
You can see in this picture that one of the bolt holes does not line up. I thought I remember seeing this posted somewhere before, but could not find it today. Musclecar oil pan on a LQ4.

This one too. You can see the hole that used to have a bolt.

Re: Longbed 6.0 build

Since I'm going to be using the existing trans cooler lines, I will need to figure out something to support this hanger as the new pan does not have a mounting spot for it.

Re: Longbed 6.0 build

The supports for the starter wire, etc. running along the front of the oil pan worked nicely.

Re: Longbed 6.0 build

So got the Doug Thorley headers test fit with the dipstick and plug wires.
Instead of buying the Lokar dipstick that is recommended, I used the one that came with the new oilpan. Just a little 1 inch spacer and a little bending, it fit just fine.

Re: Longbed 6.0 build

Also, these spark plug wires are pretty darn short. They are the MSD 32813. Found this number from the board, but I'm not too sure about them.

Re: Longbed 6.0 build

Ran into an issue. My plan was to utiluze the 3ott column and convert it over to a column shift for the 4l80e. I bought the cpp auto linkage but it's not gonna work with the doug thorley headers. The header exits right in front of the mechanism. I guess it's time to buy a floor shift unless anyone has a brilliant idea for me. 😢

Re: Longbed 6.0 build

Just a FYI.....the MSD wires sometimes cause havoc on the ECU. Especially if it rolls over a few times before it starts, it is seen as a misfire, and could cause "limp mode" reduced power. I tune a little with HP tuners, and have had crazy issues before....swap to stock plug wires, and the issue is gone. As far at the length, you might have the car ones, the truck version is longer. Nice build, will be watching.
