F/S: rare chromed 1977-80 GMC grill-original!

This grill is very difficult to find and is the hardest of all 77-80 grills to find. It's in great original condition with NO bar breaks! This grill was originally chrome dipped and the insert pocket openings were flat black around the edge and argent silver in the bar area. Not sure what the value of this grill is worth (I've rarely seen them for sale) but I recently sold a similar, complete and near flawless grill with minor restoration locally for $1100. For this bare grill I'm asking $350 plus the ride. If interested, I also have a pair of OEM red horizontal metal trim pieces and a decent center emblem.

KS isn't too far from me here in Iowa-I'd do $380 shipped w/the 2 trim pieces.

I took a pic of the only spot I could find any flaking...it's on the bottom drivers side....

Thanks for the quick reply with pic, I'm going to pass.

You are right, you don't see these for sale very often. Good luck with sale!

Yeah-it is an extremely rare grill to find that's for sure. I've got another one just like it on an 80 GMC k2500 pickup that will be a frame off once I find time lol

Re: F/S: rare chromed 1977-80 GMC grill-original!

I have 4 of the chromed ones. It is just hard to get ambitious to restore one. I am sure it would be worth the time once it is done. I am glad you priced yours. It gives me a baseline on what to try and sell mine for. People ask all of the time and the chrome ones are hard to price because they really just don't come up for sale.
I just moved the business into a shop though so most of my time is spent trying to get it sorted out.

I love all of the phases of restoration work you are doing. People don't realize what is involved on finding the correct colors and processes involved in restoring these parts

I agree with ya there! It's fun for me since I used to do a LOT of restoring of 78-88 gbodies (Montes, Regals, Cutlass) as well as NOS parts and vehicle harness builds for them. Back in the day while building them I was buying up a lot of NOS parts and parts I thought would be tuff to find should these trucks ever get really popular. I've got a lot more stuff but building harness is what I'm most focused on.

If you don't mind, could you PM me or post here on the color/brand you are using on the GMC grilles? I have one ready for paint but never did it as I didn't know the color and don't want to paint it twice

Re: F/S: rare chromed 1977-80 GMC grill-original!

Sure-I'll have to go through what paints I have mixed for various grills. The GMC grills have different greys, different patterns, etc. a lot of the "pop" comes from the prepping process. You see NOS grills pop up every so often but they aren't ever painted so that's why I restore good grills. I have a few 75-76 GMC grills to do also.

I actually have a base 77 grille I need to paint. But a couple of my chrome ones could probably use it too. I know a lot of people say the color is argent but I am sure that varies buy company on the shade.

Re: F/S: rare chromed 1977-80 GMC grill-original!

GMC grills were not argent-they were a flat silver-some had a little very fine metallic. Then, some were a medium machine gray with brighter silver accents in the 10 grid openings-I think it depended on the trim level option. I also think the chromed versions were 1980 only as the steel inserts were not stainless and were painted the same as the primary body color-at least of the ones I've found this has been the case. Painted 1980 GMC grills gotbthe polished stainless pieces.

Actually only one of my 4 chromed grilles had the painted bars. The others were the stainless.

Re: F/S: rare chromed 1977-80 GMC grill-original!

Huh weird....I wonder if there is anyone on the site who has production line info on the GMC grills and how it was determined what trim they got? I've seen several "NOS" GMC grills but none looked painted as they are on the actual trucks-curious as to the process.

Re: F/S: rare chromed 1977-80 GMC grill-original!

The ones that had the painted horizontal bars came on the 1980 GMCs that had the contrasting color hoods with the stripes

My photobucket is acting up but search 1980 GMC Jimmy brochure. It has a picture of a black one

Re: F/S: rare chromed 1977-80 GMC grill-original!

I've got an 80 K2500 GMC all original, all black and it has black insert trim pieces on it and it too is a chrome grill. It still wear its original Carmine? Red interior which is nearly flawless! Perfect dash, pulse/delay, deluxe door panels w/speaker option, gauges and AM/FM 8-track. Has a 400 small block, TH400 and a 205TC with 4.10 front and rear locking diffs-a pretty cool survivor truck that needs restored-it was my first look at a chrome GMC grill....I had one in storage that I had forgotten about until I pulled all of my GMC grills out for restoration.
