Rear end question

I have a '64 GMC series 1000. My rear gear ate its self last week. My friend gave me a 5 lug rear end from '71-'72. What all needs to be done to get the newer rear end installed on my '64? I have a very limited budget. Thanks in advance for the help.

Re: Rear end question

Are they both for a leaf or coil spring truck?

Should be a bolt in and go. You will have to get a pan hard bar that works. The 72 one may work, the 64 one is longer.

Post picture under the rear of your truck and of the replacement rear end. Instead of speculating on what you have, we can give definitive answers.

Re: Rear end question

I dont know how to post pics but both rear ends are leaf spring. The newer rear end is 64" from outside of brake drum to outside of brake drum. My old rear end is 60.5" from outside of brake drum to outside of brake drum.

Re: Rear end question

That’s what GMC’s has mostly.
The 71/72 will be 1.5” wider that your Dana I believe. If the leaf mounts line up, then go for it.

Re: Rear end question

I measured from leaf spring bracket to leaf spring bracket and the difference is 3/4". Will I be able to use the new rear end?

Re: Rear end question

Sometimes there is enough movement in the spring eye bushings to be able to bolt up a differential with wider spring perch spacing. If not the spring perched will need to be cut off and welded back on at the correct spacing. Are the shock mounts the same between the two?

Re: Rear end question

With Alberarle listed as your location thought you may be near the sound and bit more east. I have a 65 GMC frame with the Dana in it and if you want to make the trip you can have it. That will give you a bolt in fix and don't have to worry about shocks or pinion angle.
