Redhead steerring gears

Just curious what people are using for steering gear boxes?

Is REDHEAD worth the money? They claim theirs have custom fit bearings and guaranteed no slop.

I’m happy with the two I’m using. Have also heard good things about the work at powersteering.com This shop did excellent work on rebuilding my steering pumps.

I have a Redhead on my ‘71 and am quite satisfied with it!

I am satisfied with my Red Head manual box, but "no slop" is misleading with the one I got. It's much better than the old one, no doubt, but I don't think it is as good as they were off the factory line.

I went with a brand new Borgeson 12.7:1 power assisted box ($421)...love it!

New 15" steering wheel in the mail on the way to me...

I have this too. Feels more like a modern power ASSIST box

I'm happy so far. Had to replace the new cheaper one I bought off *bay because it leaked out of every place possible. Lesson learned. They were also great to work with, returned the core in the same box & bag and went smooth. It may be more expensive but its money well spent in my opinion. I also had to replace the brake master cylinder and proportioning valve that was new because they also leaked. It is horrible when new parts are not good.

When I installed the new box I not knowingly broke the ground strap on the rag joint. My horn quit working and had no idea why. I did a few searches on this site, found a few things to check and figured it out. Not sure how long or if I would have thought to check this without the support here. A lot of great people with a lot of usefully knowledge.

I have used 6 redhead steering boxes over the years. Everything from Ford F250 to my First Gen Cummins. I have one in my 72' Blazer now and put one in my 72' Suburban when I did that one. I even had them do a custom build on my 56 Dodge Station Wagon which has the steering shaft built into the box. Pretty much every time I get an old rig, I go an buy a new steering box for it from them. I may be biased because they are somewhat local to me so I save on shipping. All they do are steering boxes and a bunch of them everyday. They know what they are doing, friendly, and I have never had an issue so I use them. I like supporting a small locally owned business when possible to.

I just looked at their website... they're $560 now.

I am on a tight budget with my build so I went with a NAPA reman, but will eventually upgrade to the Redhead in a couple of years.

The parts store remans haven't lasted for me.

Ha, so that is what the ground strap is for…my horn works, but strap is long gone.

I have used 4 redhead steering boxes and currently still have two trucks with them. 2wheel and 4wheel drive. I will always use redhead steering gears, they have good customer service with fast turn around on service.

Redhead is a great American family business that remanufactures their steering gears right here in America with American workers.

I've installed many on 2nd gen dodges. In the last 2 years I've had 3 the guys had issues with and it was a PITA to get them replacements. Hopefully those were just flukes. I did just order one for a square body I'm building for a guy.
