Re: Scored a great deal on a '70 Stepper!

another update.. I added the 3" drop spindles I bought on ebay for about $160..wow great deal! I did some research and found that the early 90's c1500 brake rotors will fit right on the spindles using the same wheels bearings from a '71-'72. My front brake kit with bearings, rotors, pads, seals, calipers, hoses and spindles was about $360 total.. not bad at all.. here's some pics of the drop.

Re: Scored a great deal on a '70 Stepper!

I decided to swap over to a 5 lug setup so I can use wheels I got through work at a good deal. Either way I'm happy with the way they look, I went with 17's because I wanted wheels that aren't too big or too small. Despite my young age I still want to represent the old school look! Once I get this drop completed I think it's all going to come together nicely.

Re: Scored a great deal on a '70 Stepper!

Put in some overtime this week between being at work and off on sunday.. dropped the rear end using an axle flip kit and I dropped about 5 inches. The front sits about a .25 of an inch higher than the rear but for the most part I'm very satisfied with the overall height. Depending on the ride a C-notch may be in order.

Next up will be the rear axle conversion so I can get the matching wheels in the back..

Which brings me to the next question: what is the widest tire I can fit in the back? I think from what I've read you can get about a 295 width tire with the proper backspace (about 4"- 4.5" If I remember correctly) and I do have the narrow 67-69 axle.. this was determined by measuring from the backing plates, which came out to 55.5'

stay tuned! more to come...

That looks sweet.

U gonna take it to Goodguys weekend after next?

I will be there in my 67 Chevelle and would love to look at that paint a little closer. Or the Pavillions sometime.

Re: Scored a great deal on a '70 Stepper!

Ok, so the ride was rough, the rear frame was sitting on the bump stops and the ride was terrible. Thought the rear end was going to fly out! I bought a c-notch kit locally, mcgauphys brand. The kit was designed to be bolted in, but a friend and I spent this Saturday welding them into place. Turned out real nice and the ride is 110% better..rides real smooth.

Without the bump stops, the rear end is sitting almost exactly 2" lower than the front... so I have lowering springs by POL on the way.

check out some pics..

Re: Scored a great deal on a '70 Stepper!

Ok, so I was able to install the rear axles and finally got the matching 5 lugs rims mounted and balanced. Almost had a nightmare happen when I removed the axles from the diff..the sliding differential pin bolt snapped when I was taking it out! :0 luckily I was able to turn the rest by hand and found a replacement at the local oreilly's...nightmare avoided..thank god! here is some pics of the progress..oh and I took here out for the first outing here in Scottsdale AZ at the pavilions last weekend

what do ya'll think so far?
